ICT Full Form Explained!
|Information and Technology||Information and Communications Technology|
ICT, or information and communications technology (or technologies), is the infrastructure and components that enable modern computing.
Although there isn’t a universal definition of ICT that is accepted, it can be used to describe all devices, networking parts, applications, systems, and other items that allow people (i.e. governments, businesses, nonprofit agencies and criminal organizations) to interact with one another in the digital realm.
ICT components (ICT Full Form)
ICT encompasses both the internet-enabled sphere as well as the mobile one powered by wireless networks. It also includes old technologies such radio broadcast, telephone broadcast, and landline telephones. These are all still widely used today along with the latest ICT pieces like robotics and artificial intelligence.
ICT is often used interchangeably with IT (for Information Technology); however ICT is more general and covers all components that are related to computers and digital technologies.
The ICT components list is extensive and continues to grow. Some components, such computers and phones, have been around since the beginning of time. Others, such as smartphones and digital TVs, are recent additions.
ICT is often more than just the list of its components. It also covers the application of all those components. It is here that ICT has its true potential, power and danger.
ICT’s economic and societal impacts
ICT is leveraged for economic, societal and interpersonal transactions and interactions. It has dramatically changed how people live, work, communicate, learn, and interact with each other. It continues its revolution in all aspects of our lives. ICT was first introduced by computers and robots can now perform many of those tasks that humans used to do. For example, computers used to answer phones, directing calls to the right individuals. But robots are now able to not only answer the phone but can also respond to calls much faster and more efficiently.
ICT’s role in economic development and business growth is so crucial that many claim it was responsible for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Broad shifts in society also depend on ICT, with individuals moving away from face to face interactions and moving into digital spaces. This new era is frequently termed the Digital Age.
ICT isn’t all revolutionary, but it has its limitations. ICT’s benefits and opportunities are greater for those who are richer than the rest.
Some examples of findings from the World Bank are, for instance. The World Bank reported in 2016 that more than 75% people have access to a mobile phone. Due to a shortage of ICT infrastructure, internet access via fixed or mobile Broadband is expensive in many places. Further, the World Bank estimates that 4 billion of the world’s 7.4 billion population doesn’t have Internet access. A further estimate by the World Bank is that only around 1.1 billion people have access high-speed broadband internet.
In the United States and elsewhere, this discrepancy in access to ICT has created the so-called digital divide.
The World Bank, numerous governmental authorities and non-government organizations (NGOs) advocate policies and programs that aim to bridge the digital divide by providing greater access to ICT among those individuals and populations struggling to afford it.
These institutions state that ICT-capable individuals are not eligible for the numerous benefits and opportunities that ICT brings and will consequently be more behind in socio-economic terms.
One of the Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, is for the United Nations to increase “significantly” access to information and technology. It also aims to make it affordable and universally available to all countries.
The ICT market offers economic benefits as well as the wider areas of business and society.
ICT vendors have seen their prices drop and they are now able to deliver new technologies faster. We required telephone companies to maintain miles upon miles of telephone lines. However, they now have advanced networking materials that allow them to provide internet, television and telephone services. Customers are able to choose from a wider range of delivery options and prices.
The importance ICT has for businesses
ICT advancements have offered a variety of advantages for businesses. They range from automated business processes, which have reduced costs, to the big-data revolution, where organizations are using the huge trove of ICT data into insights that drive new services and products, to ICT-enabled transaction such as internet shopping, social media, and telemedicine that offer customers more options for how they communicate, shop and interact.
ICT has brought many challenges and problems to individuals, organizations, and society. The increasing use of high speed internet, digitization of data and the growing global network has all contributed to new levels or crime. ICT enabled criminals can create electronic-enabled schemes, illegally gain access, steal money, intellectual properties, private information, and disrupt critical infrastructure. It has also brought automation and robots that displace workers who are unable to transfer their skills to new positions. ICT has enabled more people to restrict their interactions with other people, creating what some fear is an aging population that might lose some of its humanity.
ICT stands for Information and Communications Technology. It’s a broad term that covers all technological tools and resources (communications devices and applications) that we use for network-based control, monitoring, telecommunications and audiovisual processing. Transmission systems, intelligent building management system, broadcast media, and other related functions. Any product that stores, retrieves and manages digital information, such as computers, robots or mobile phones, is included.
